The rolling hills of meadows and beautiful valleys of wildflowers in the Awatere Valley and Flaxbourne area of Marlborough – located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island – is the home of our environmentally sustainable business, Flaxbourne Honey.
Our story began in 2014 when we decided to take our passion for nature and the environment a step further. With fond memories of hobby beekeeping in our childhood, we set out on our journey, re-learning all about best beekeeping practices and consequently starting our family business, Flaxbourne Honey.
We are a husband and wife team with three young children living a sustainable life on our farm on the east coast of Marlborough. With our remote location we generate our own power, have a milking goat, a veggie garden, and cows and sheep grazing on our hills of green pasture. It was important for us to create something that resonated with our beliefs and way of life so it made sense to produce honey that is unpasteurized and raw, packaged in sustainable pots that are 100% biodegradable.
Our Bees
Our beehives are spread across our farm and on the land of kind farmers in the Awatere Valley and Flaxbourne area. We have kept our bees within minimal travel distance from our home so as to reduce our environmental footprint. With our mild winters, they are permanently located on their sites all year round which greatly minimizes disturbance to our bees and the environment. To ensure that each hive has access to a diverse and sufficient range of pollen and nectar sources, our apiary sites are kept small and are strategically placed which ensures happy contented bees.
We are committed to produce the best handcrafted honey that we possibly can straight from the hive and deliver it with a “farm to table” concept in mind.
